Sparkly Fun Elton John Fantasy
Rocketman
Elton John's greatest hits set to his slightly interpreted life story. It's a little slow to get started, but once the "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" dance scene happens, it's a captivating musical all the way to the end. See it and sing along for days.
Punky, Timeless & Relevant Reality Check
The Matrix
I saw The Matrix once when I was pretty young, and it kind of scarred me. I was terrified my reality wasn't real. (Really though, who's to say it is?) Watching it as an adult was more impressive than scary. The plot line is imaginative, the themes are deep and especially relevant in the age of AI, and the special effects stand the test of time.
Themes Continue, Strong Woman Doesn't
The Matrix Reloaded
So as you'll see, I went on a Matrix kick after watching the first movie. The Matrix Reloaded goes into how the Matrix works and draws obvious parallels to Christianity, and once again, I enjoyed the themes and story line. However, Trinity became a trope of a female character who exists only for a man's adoration, which *eye roll*. The chemistry between her and Neo is also terrible. With that, it's worth watching and a pretty good follow to the first movie.
An OK End To Series
The Matrix Revolutions
Pros: Special effects were great, the story took some turns, and it tied up loose ends from the previous two movies. Cons: The dialogue wasn't great, I hate the "Kid" character, and there were a lot of predictable moments. Fingers crossed the rumored reboot expands on this infinite universe instead of destroys it.
Artsy Answer to Backstory Questions
The Animatrix
These shorts talk about some of the character and premise backstories in the Matrix Trilogy. The varied and artsy animation makes every one worth watching. The short detailing the war between man and machine was my favorite. My complaint: In typical anime style, the women were oversexualized. Just hanging out at my workplace in my underwear... yeah OK...
Why Religious "Therapy" is Detrimental
The Miseducation of Cameron Post
Teenager Cameron Post is caught kissing another girl and sent to a Bible school to "pray the gay away." This a thoughtful coming-of-age story that showcases the dangers of making people feel like something is wrong with them as a person. It's a lesson I wish more people would understand.
Redneck Heist Entertains as Planned
Logan Lucky
The Logan brothers try to turn a family curse into family fortune with the ultimate redneck heist. A funny, entertaining film that left me wondering why I found West Virginia so relatable.
Pick This Before Anything Else:
The Matrix. It's a cult classic that's relevant now more than ever as at least some of us are getting paranoid about AI. If you're looking for something more lighthearted, Rocketman is definitely worth your time.
