Foods to Try in Thailand & Cambodia (Gallery)

Smiling woman cooks pad Thai

I was a pretty average Midwestern eater before embarking on this trip. Most restaurants I ate at served American (or Americanized) dishes, salsa hotter than mild made my nose run, and I loved mayo (especially on scrambled eggs). Part of the thrill of traveling for me is trying new food, so naturally I documented almost everything I ate. Check out my gallery of dishes to try on your own trip to Southeast Asia or at a new-to-you restaurant in your neighborhood. Warning: You may come back with an addiction to spicy food and a general disappointment with American restaurants.

P.S. The first images in the gallery are dishes I made at Silom Thai Cooking School, which I highly recommend. The food was delicious, the chef was knowledgeable and funny, and the experience was excellent. To date, it's the best curry I've ever had and my favorite memory from Bangkok. (That's me cooking pad Thai above.)

P.P.S. I wasn't eating strictly vegan while I was in Thailand and Cambodia. There are a couple vegan-friendly dishes in my gallery, and this list from The Nomadic Vegan has some additional options, too.
